How to Use the AT LEAST Search Operator in HeinOnline

The AT LEAST search operator allows you to specify the minimum number of times a word or phrase must appear in a document to be included in your search results.

This feature helps narrow your results by identifying documents in which your search terms appear more frequently, rather than documents that mention them only once.

Watch this short video or keep reading to learn more.

Using the AT LEAST Operator

To use the AT LEAST operator, enter atleast, followed by the minimum number of occurrences you want, and place your search term or phrase in parentheses.

Example:

atleast5(merger)

This search returns documents where the word merger appears at least five times.

Searching for Exact Phrases

To search for an exact phrase, enclose the phrase in quotation marks within the parentheses.

Example:

atleast3("artificial intelligence")

This search returns documents where the exact phrase artificial intelligence appears at least three times.

Combining AT LEAST with Boolean Operators

You can use the Boolean operators AND and OR within the AT LEAST operator to create more specific searches.

Using AND

Use AND when you want multiple terms to meet the specified minimum occurrence threshold.

Example:

atleast5(merger AND bankruptcy)

This search returns documents where both merger and bankruptcy appear at least five times each.

Using OR

Use OR when you want either of the specified terms to meet the minimum occurrence threshold.

Example:

atleast5("law firm" OR merger)

This search returns documents where either law firm or merger appears at least five times.

Combining AT LEAST with Other Search Terms

The AT LEAST operator can also be combined with standard Boolean searching to further refine your results.

Example:

hogan AND atleast5(merger AND bankruptcy)

This search returns documents that contain:

  • The word hogan at least once.
  • The word merger at least five times.
  • The word bankruptcy at least five times.

This approach is useful when you want to include an additional search term without requiring it to meet the same frequency threshold.
